1793 Antique Portrait Engraving of Monsieur La Faille, Court of Henry VIII | Drawn by Hans Holbein | Engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi

$149.00
This is a 1793 engraving on laid paper of Monsieur LaFaille, a French gentleman at the court of King Henry VIII.

This color-printed, stipple engraving portrait comes from a series of portraits, engraved from the original drawings of Hans Holbein by Francesco Bartolozzi (engraver to the King), featuring Lords & Ladies from the court of King Henry VII of England. (noted at the bottom right of the drawing)

The originals were created in the mid-1500s and found in the Queen's cupboards in the late 18th century.

The series engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi was published in 1793 as "Facsimiles of original drawings by Hans Holbein in the collection of his Majesty, for the portraits of illustrious persons of the Court of Henry VIII."

Bartolozzi developed his style to imitate the subtleties of renaissance and baroque chalk drawings and became deservedly famous for his stipple engraving. The portraits in this collection show how effective this technique was in reproducing with such incredible fidelity Holbein's original designs.

About the Artist:

Francesco Bartolozzi was born in Florence, Italy in 1727. He manifested so much skill and taste in designing that he was placed under the supervision of two Florentine artists, including Ignazio Hugford and Giovanni Domenico Ferretti who instructed him in painting. After devoting three years to that art, he went to Venice and studied engraving. He spent six years there working for Joseph Wagner, an engraver and printseller, before setting up his own workshop.

His first productions in Venice were plates in the style of Marco Ricci, Zuccarelli. He then moved for a short time in 1762 to Rome, where he completed a set of engravings representing frescoes at Grottaferrata by Domenichino depicting the life of St Nilus. Those and his etchings of Old Master's works, began to draw attention throughout Europe.

In 1763 he met Richard Dalton, the English Royal Librarian who was traveling in Italy looking for acquisitions for the King's collections. Dalton offered him an appointment as Engraver to the King (George III); Bartolozzi accepted and left for London in 1764 where he served for 40 years.
