A genuine antique map over 320 years old!

A fine copper engraved original antique county map of Staffordshire, England. The map is highly detailed with decorative title cartouche and scales of miles, and hand colored.

At some point in it's long life it was professionally restored and framed. The back of the frame features provenance on the map and the cartographer, shown in photos, and typed out below for your review.

The provenance states that this was believed to be from the 1722 Edition of Camden's Brittania, however it was later scratched out and replaced with the date 1695. It appears that further study showed that it was in fact from the 1695 First Edition, and a correction was made.

The map is not in perfect condition, but few 300+ year old items are. The restoration job was very well done, and it's imperfections are really only evident in an up close inspection.

An impressive piece of history to adorn your walls, this map makes for a wonderful work of old-world art.

It comes framed and ready to hang.

The frame itself is showing a bit of age, with a few chips, nicks, and scratches. Judging by the age and wear of the frame, as well as the yellowing on the provenance paper that was typed on a typewriter, it appears to have been restored and reframed at some point before the 1980s.

DESCRIPTION: This map is believed to be from the 1722 edition (first edition was in 1645) of Morden's maps for Camden's "Britannia"
This map covers the English county of Staffordshire and includes a striking cartouche typical of Morden's work. A scale is included which sets out the scale in "great" "middle" and small miles. A further separate notation indicates that the map (possibly a set of atlases) was produced to be sold by Abel Swale, Awnfham, John Churchil". The two cities of Lichfield and Stafford are shown as an aggregation of buildings. Many smaller towns and villages are marked as well as a mountain range, rivers, forests, and large estates. In typical Morden style, detail is somewhat lacking in comparison to other maps. However, this lends itself to a simplistic and artistically appealing result. This colored version is especially attractive.
