Ralph de Burgos (b. Shanghai China 1906. d. Washington DC, 1979) was a naturalized American Citizen, the son of a Spanish father and a French mother, both born in Egypt. The family moved from Korea to Japan during Burgo's early childhood and he began his art training at the Missionary School there. The discipline of his Japanese instructors influenced his entire career. After coming to the United States, Ralph studied for the next ten years in New York City, at the National Academy of Design, the Arts Students League, the School of Industrial Arts, and the Arthur Schneider School of Modern Painting.
He came to Washington in 1946 after the World War II service as a combat artist with the Coast Guard in the Pacific. He joined the faculty of the Washington Workshop. In the same year, he established the de Burgos School of Art in Georgetown. In 1955, he opened another school in Falls Church. He continued the Georgetown school until 1972 and then continued the Falls Church studio until the time of his death.
Mr. de Burgos was a president of the Society of Washington Artists and of the American Art League.
He had numerous shows of his own work in the Washington area. His pictures were displayed in the Capitol and in various U.S. embassies. Among other works is a mural at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Washington. He restored and refinished the portraits of 32 presidents of Georgetown University.
This painting for sale is a nearly full-bodied portrait of a woman sitting on a chair. It is signed "Ralph de Burgos '48" on the bottom right.
Presented in a beautiful gold-brush painted wooden frame that has a grooved scalloped pattern that can be felt with the stroke of a finger. The frame measures 33.5" tall x 28" wide.
