Ballet Dancer Painting | Large Original Oil on Canvas | "David" by Joan Cox 1990 | Male Ballet Dancer | Dance Studio Art
Ballet Dancer Painting | Large Original Oil on Canvas | "David" by Joan Cox 1990 | Male Ballet Dancer | Dance Studio Art
$3,999.00
A beautiful study of a male dancer.
"David" sits relaxing on a bench in a studio after a rehearsal.
He seems to stare pensively toward the window, where the late afternoon light spills onto the walls and hardwood studio floor.
Artist Joan Cox makes wonderful use of light in this painting, and "David's" pensive look inspires a sense of stillness and calm.
The painting is on stretched canvas, with a thin, simple raw wood frame.
It's beautiful as it is, and it comes ready to hang. If you felt so inclined, a new more substantial frame would really elevate this gorgeous painting to a whole new level of appreciation.
It's rare to find many paintings of male ballet dancers, let alone of this size and quality, and by such an established artist as Joan Cox.
This painting is one of her earliest works available on the market, completed in 1990 while she was still working to complete her B.F.A at Towson State University in Maryland.
An excellent, rare piece to add to a private or public contemporary art collection.
About the Artist: Joan Cox - b. 1969
A Baltimore-born feminist and lesbian artist, Joan is a figurative painter whose work portrays intimate and loving relationships between women—through the use of contemporary narrative portraiture. Joan is represented by Catalyst Contemporary in Baltimore and had her most recent solo exhibit entitled “Frauenhaus” at Catalyst in late 2019 - early 2020
Joan Cox has created many different bodies of work, exploring new mediums and exhibiting steadily. Cox began as a watercolor-based figurative painter, experimented with digital media and collage-based paintings and then transitioned into large oil and acrylic paintings. Her subject is consistent and focuses on the figure, both actual and implied. Recently, Cox shifted her focus to the portrait—individual artist portraits and double portraits of women in intimate relationships.
2013 M.F.A. in Painting—Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Low-Residency Program at Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center
1991 B.F.A. with Honors—Fine Arts/Painting Concentration, Towson State University, Towson, MD Summa Cum Laude, Valedictorian for Spring graduating class
Condition notes: Excellent overall condition. A few small pieces of paint absent on the baseboard by his right foot. A blemish on his left inner thigh that tends to blend in with the way the artist portrays the light on the subject.
Dimensions:
41" x 28.5" x 1.5"
