Art Deco Machine Age George Switzer Nocturne Aluminum Inlaid Bakelite Bar Tray

Art Deco Machine Age George Switzer Nocturne Aluminum Inlaid Bakelite Bar Tray

$599.00
Very rare original 1932 "Nocturne" Pattern Tray designed by George Switzer, manufactured by Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company.

Designed in New York, New York and manufactured in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This exquisite example of classic Art Deco design, features an aluminum body, with inlaid Micarta bands of tiger orange on either side of a black band of the same width and bordered by stripes of aluminum. The black band is inlaid with a crescent moon and star floating above an abstract sailboat, an iconic image that Switzer has used in other pieces he has designed.

Micarta was a proprietary formulation produced by Westinghouse in response to other phenolic successes such as Bakelite. It was conceived to withstand staining from alcohol, tobacco, and other substances. Perhaps this is why the tray has maintained its rich colors and beautiful appearance after all these years.

This tray is a true embodiment of American Art Deco Style, and an identical tray can even be found on display in the Yale University Art Gallery. This and other George Switzer Micarta Trays have realized prices well into the thousands at Sothebys Auctions as well as the 1st Dibs website.

Dimensions:17.88" L x 12.31" W x 0.75" H

Notes: Overall above average condition when considering it's age. There is some metal wear throughout the handles and metal rims, but the display board is very clean looking with very light surface wear. A very light scratch on the sail of the boat. View photos for details.
